Product Description

NC50238 is a stunning 1942 Stinson V77 Gullwing that was once owned and operated by some of the most senior military figures in the US military during the 1950’s. This aircraft was one of 500 built for the Lead/Lease program to Great Britan. Many of these aircraft saw action in a variety of British outposts and when they returned to the US after the war, the military logbooks were destroyed and new ones issued when they converted from AT-19’s to the civilian version known as the  Vultee V77.

The registration document displayed indicates that General Curtis E LeMay and several of his officer colleagues owned this aircraft in 1952 whilst based at the home of Strategic Air Command, Offut Air Force base, Omaha, Nebraska. It is understood that this aircraft was used to keep the owners current in recent flying experience and also for “hunting missions” into Canada. No doubt the roll down window was a feature that the General utilised extensively to expell his cigar fumes from the cabin.

Following their ownership, it then passsed to the Pittsburg School of Aeronautics where the lastest  instrument panel was fabricated. Other owners since include a Mr Robert Stratton of Greenville, North Carolina and “Big” John Shearer a retired airline pilot now perfoming in a Vintage Café Blues band whilst sailing his sloop around the Carribean. NC50238 is a historically significant aircraft with excellent ramp presence, charisma and charm.
